BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Christian Kuehne capped off a dominant weekend by capturing both the singles and doubles main draw championships as Stetson men's tennis concluded competition at the Country Club of Birmingham Invitational on Sunday.
Kuehne finished the three-day tournament unbeaten across singles and doubles, going 4-0 individually while teaming with Lukas Janousek for three consecutive doubles victories and the main draw championship.
In Sunday's singles final, Kuehne faced East Tennessee State's Arenui Luethi and found himself trailing after dropping the opening set 6-4. The Stetson veteran responded emphatically, taking control of the match with a 6-1 second set before carrying that momentum into the deciding frame.
Kuehne surrendered just one game again in the third, completing the comeback with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory to claim the main draw singles title.
It was Kuehne's first three-set match of the weekend after advancing through his first three contests without dropping a set.
He opened the tournament Friday with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over College of Charleston's Jacob Rouleau-Mailly before rolling past Southern Miss' Matei Varbanciu 6-1, 6-1. Kuehne then defeated Samford's Vitorio Sardinha 6-2, 7-5 on Saturday to earn his place in Sunday's championship match.
Across four singles victories, Kuehne won eight of nine sets and dropped just 25 games.
Kuehne's championship Sunday began in doubles alongside Janousek, with the Stetson tandem facing Louisiana's William Ribero and David Simeonov for the main draw title.
The Hatters closed out an undefeated doubles weekend with a 6-3 victory over the Ragin' Cajuns duo to capture the championship.
Kuehne and Janousek earned their place in the final with a pair of 6-3 victories Saturday. They first defeated South Alabama's Victor Frumholz and Harold van Raemdonck before following with another 6-3 decision over Tennessee Tech's Kai Inoue and Murilo Burckhardt.
The pair finished the tournament 3-0 while surrendering just nine total games across the three matches.
Janousek also put together a strong weekend individually. After falling to Louisiana's Samuel Kyjaci in three sets Friday, Janousek responded with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Jacksonville State's Zachary Murphy.
He followed that performance Saturday with one of Stetson's most dramatic wins of the tournament. After dropping the opening set 6-2 against Kennesaw State's Xavier Ferrer, Janousek answered with a 6-1 second set before prevailing 12-10 in the deciding tiebreak.
Janousek closed his singles weekend Sunday against Samford's Sebastian Harrison. He cruised to a 6-1 opening-set victory before Harrison responded 6-4 in the second and took the deciding tiebreak 10-5.
Gian Durrer also contributed a singles victory during the weekend, opening competition Friday with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Tennessee Tech's Murilo Burckhardt. He later fell to ETSU's Luethi on Saturday before his scheduled Sunday match against Samford's Vitorio Sardinha ended in a walkover.
Durrer also partnered with Alexandre Bergeron in doubles Saturday. The duo opened with a convincing 6-2 victory over Tennessee Tech's Ricard Yepez and Linus Rohlin before falling 6-2 to North Alabama's Samuel Balfour Dominguez and Jip Langerhuizen.
Bergeron's weekend also included a closely contested singles match against Louisiana's William Ribero on Friday. Bergeron pushed the opening set to a tiebreak before eventually falling 7-6, 7-5.
Overall, the Hatters collected 11 on-court victories during the three-day tournament, with Kuehne accounting for seven between singles and doubles. His perfect 7-0 combined weekend was highlighted by victories in both championship matches Sunday.
"Solid tournament results overall," Associate Head Coach John Shade said. "I'm very proud of Christian and Lukas winning their Main Draw doubles final. It was also great to see Christian then transition into singles and win his Main Draw singles final. We now look forward to hosting our Fall Invitational in early November."
The CCB Invitational marked Stetson's penultimate event of the fall schedule. The Hatters will return home to close out the fall when they host the Mad Hatter Invitational, Nov. 6-8, at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center in DeLand.
