Philadelphia, Pa. – Stetson University redshirt junior
Ryan Peters was just a couple of shots away from a sparking opening round at the PGA Works Collegiate Championship on Monday.
Played at the Union League Liberty Hill Course, Peters posted a 75 in the first round and is four-shots off the lead heading into Tuesday's second round of play. The second round will be played at the Union League Golf Club at Torresdale before concluding on Wednesday back at the Liberty Hill Course.
"This is such a good experience for Ryan and he was so close to having a really good round," Hatters' coach
Danny Forshey said. "It is so rare that I basically get to caddie a tournament for one of my players and it was such a fun day and he played really well."
Forshey said Peters had three bad shots in his round, with tee shots on the par three 14
th hole and the par five ninth hole costing him three shots."
"He should have been able to make birdie on the ninth hole, but his tee shot left him in an impossible position behind a tree," Forshey said. "The shot on the 14
th got away from him as well and then he didn't make his bogey putt."
Peters had three birdies in the round, which he started on the back nine. He birdied the par 4 first hole (his 10
th), the par 5 third and the par 4 eighth. He went to his last hole, the ninth, needing a birdie to finish the day one back, but instead had to scramble to make bogey.
Forshey said Tuesday's round will be a challenge for all the players.
"That is a placement course and you have to make sure to keep your ball below the hole if you want to have any chance," Forshey said. "We'd much rather be chipping from below the holes tomorrow than putting from above.
"I don't know how this is going to shake out, but I know it is going to be fun watching him play the next two days."
Peters will be play on the 6,591-yard, par 70, course at 9:20 a.m. on Tuesday. He will again be starting on the 10
th tee as the 10 teams playing in the tournament tee from the front nine.
