Ryan Peters Opens Play in 34th PGA Works Championship

Philadelphia, Pa. – Stetson University Ryan Peters has traveled north to represent the Stetson men's golf program in the 34th Annual PGA Works Championship.

Peters, a redshirt junior from Port of Spain, Trinidad, is representing Stetson in the event for the second consecutive year. The event was played at the famed TPC Sawgrass near Jacksonville last year, and Peters finished eighth in the individual event.

The historic Union League of Philadelphia is hosting the 2022 Collegiate Championship today through Wednesday and is donating two of its courses for the event - Union League Liberty Hill and The Union League Golf Club at Torresdale.

The event is known as the most culturally significant championship in collegiate golf and features Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) and other Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) from all over the country.

There are Men's Division I and Division II team divisions, a Women's Team division, as well as individuals representing their schools and playing for Men's and Women's individual titles.

The PGA Works Championship was founded in 1986 by the National Negro Golf Association, when HBCUs did not have the same postseason championship opportunities that existed for other institutions. Today, the Championship retains its founding vision to open doors for student-athletes from HBCUs and other athletes from diverse backgrounds.

In conjunction with the event, PGA WORKS hosts Beyond the Green, a career exploration event designed to educate and inspire talent from historically underrepresented backgrounds to pursue careers in the business of golf and beyond.

Beyond the Green partnered with Philadelphia community organizations to provide students access to industry leaders, executives and influencers to help inspire and welcome them into our industry workforce.

Peters opened his first round of play early on Monday at the Torresdale Course. He is joined at the event by Hatters head coach Danny Forshey and volunteer assistant coach Art Gelow. Tuesday's round will be played at Liberty Hill.

Peters finished the 2021-22 season with a 77.4 scoring average in nine events. His best finish was a tie for fourth at the Orlando Invitational where he finished with an even par score of 216. He posted consecutive under par rounds of 70 and 69 in that event.

Live scoring for the PGA Works Collegiate Championship are being provided through GolfStat.com.
