RICHMOND, Va. - Fresh off a strong showing in Missouri, the Stetson men's golf team had their sights set on the 2023 VCU Shootout, which took place on September 18th and 19th at the picturesque Country Club of Virginia – Tuckahoe Creek in Richmond, VA. The Hatters carried their momentum from a recent 3rd place finish in Missouri into this tournament, demonstrating their consistency and competitiveness.
Competing against a field of 15 teams, the Stetson men's golf team flashed their skills once again. They secured a commendable 3rd place finish, marking their second consecutive 3rd place finish in as many tournaments.
The tournament featured a strong lineup of competitors, each bringing their own ranking and competitive edge to the event. Among the notable teams were Little Rock, Lipscomb, Stetson, VCU, UNCW, Wright State, Elon, Charleston Southern, NC State, Davidson, Richmond, JMU, George Washington, and Appalachian State.
During the VCU Shootout, the Stetson men's golf team once again demonstrated their prowess on the greens, securing a remarkable 3rd place finish with a collective effort resulted in a 29-under-par score.
Newcomer Dominic Clemons led the way with an outstanding T2 overall finish, boasting a three-round total of 203. In the opening round, the Hatters secured 4th place with a team score of 275. Clemons stood out with a team-low 66, closely followed by Bradley Goldstein, who contributed a solid 68. Javier Calls Roman added to the strong start with a 71, and Mason Quagliata matched that score. John Houchin and Truman Keppy rounded out the Hatters' team with scores of 73 and 74, respectively.
Maintaining their position in T3 after the second round on Monday, Stetson once again posted a team score of 275. Clemons continued to shine with a team-low 67, while Roman and Houchin trailed closely with scores of 68. Goldstein contributed an even-par 72, while Keppy carded a 74. Quagliata participated in the individual competition, posting a score of 76.
The final round on Tuesday saw the Hatters shoot a collective score of 282, securing their 3rd place finish for the tournament. Clemons, Goldstein, and Keppy all posted scores of 70, earning them T2, T15, and T52 positions, respectively, on the individual leaderboard. Roman and Houchin both recorded even-par 72s, finishing T19 and T28 overall. Quagliata completed the tournament with a score of 74 and a T63 finish.
With their strong performances in the Golfweek Collegiate Kickoff and the VCU Shootout, the Stetson men's golf team is undoubtedly on an upward trajectory. Their next challenge awaits at the USF Invitational in Tampa, FL, scheduled for October 9th and 10th.
