Women's Golf Shines with Second-Place Finish at Bearkat Invitational

HUNTSVILLE, Tx. - The Stetson Women's Golf team recently competed in the Remax Prime Properties Bearkat Invitational in Huntsville, TX, hosted by Sam Houston from September 25 to September 26. The tournament, held at the Elkins Lake Country Club, featured Championship Tees with a par of 71 and a yardage of 5,959. Stetson faced tough competition in a field that included Lamar, McLennan CC, Sam Houston, Stephen F. Austin, Tarleton State, Texas A&M – Commerce, Texas Southern, Texas A&M - Corp. Chris., and UT Arlington.

The tournament was shortened to 36 holes, and the Hatters came into the event looking to rebound from a seventh-place finish in their previous outing at the Hoover Invite. Stetson achieved a remarkable turnaround with a second-place finish on Tuesday, trailing only the host team, Sam Houston, who finished at +8. The Hatters' final score was +30 over par, with a score of 300 in the first round and 298 in the second round, resulting in a total score of 598.

Leading the way for Stetson was Filippa Jansson, who tied for sixth place with a +3 finish. She displayed consistency with a score of 73 on day one and a 72 on day two, bringing her total to 145. Wendy Hsiao and Lisa Colee were neck and neck in the standings, finishing T-19th (+9) and T-21st (+10), respectively. Both golfers posted a score of 76 in the first round, but Hsiao shot a 75 on day two, while Colee finished with another 76, resulting in totals of 151 and 152, respectively. Julieta Oviedo tied with Colee for 21st place (+10) with rounds of 75 and 77.

Rounding out the Hatters' five was Grace Smith, who tied for 35th place with a +15 score. Smith had a slow start with an 82 in the first round but finished strong with a 75 in the second round, concluding with a total of 157.

Stetson showcased strong performance in specific aspects of the game, ranking second-best on Par 4s with an average of 4.32. They also tied with UT Arlington on Par 5s, both teams averaging 5.17. Jansson excelled on the Par 4s, averaging an even 4.0, which was the best in the tournament. Oviedo displayed prowess on both Par 3s and Par 5s, averaging -1 on each, with averages of 2.88 and 4.83, respectively. Hsiao also averaged -1 on Par 3s with an average of 2.88.

Jansson led all golfers in the tournament with an impressive 7 birdies, while Oviedo followed closely with 5 birdies to her name.

Looking ahead, the Stetson Women's Golf team is set to retake the links for the Jupiter Women's Invite hosted by FAU on October 9 (Mon) and October 10 (Tue) at Jonathan's Landing Golf Club in Jupiter, Fla.
