Debut Comes Through For Hatters in Win Over FAMU

Men's Tennis Stetson University

#59 Hatters Win Fifth in a Row, Beat Mercer 5-2

DeLand, Fla. - The 59th-ranked Stetson men's tennis team (11-2, 2-0 Atlantic Sun) remained unbeaten in conference play and picked up its fifth consecutive win overall, sinking visiting Mercer (3-7, 0-2 A-Sun) 5-2 on Saturday at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center. Four Hatters won both their singles and doubles matches.

Stetson reeled off a clean sweep of the doubles matches, using a convincing 8-2 win from junior Didrik Berg (Oslo, Norway) and freshman Nathan Debut (Toulon, France) on Court 2 and an 8-6 Court 1 victory from senior Maksim Levanovich (Minsk, Belarus) and freshman Chester Espie (Auckland, New Zealand) to go up 1-0 on the Bears. The Court 3 match went to a tiebreaker but sophomore Hans Adrian Riseng (Oslo, Norway) and sophomore Dane Moran (Morpeth, Australia) gutted out an 8-7 win over Vincent DeLise and Joao Pagan.

Espie made it 2-0 Hatters when he swept Victor Dias 6-1, 6-3 at #5 singles; after Mercer got on the scoreboard with a win on Court 6, Levanovich and Berg locked up the victory with wins at the top two slots in the lineup. Levanovich defeated Pierre Tafelski 7-5, 6-1 while Berg knocked off Peter Tauchner 6-3, 7-5. Debut gave Stetson its fifth and final point of the day by beating David Barton 6-4, 7-5 on Court 4.

"We played a much better match today than we did yesterday against Bradley," Stetson Director of Tennis Pierre Pilote reported. "Our team raised its level for conference play and now after a grueling week of matches, we get some well-earned time off."

Stetson, which won four home matches in four tries this week, is off until 11:00 am Friday when it visits A-Sun archrival ETSU in Johnson City, Tenn.
