JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Stetson University men's tennis team saw its season come to an end, Saturday as it was defeated by No. 1 seed ETSU 4-0, in the semifinal round of the A-Sun Championships.
The fourth seeded Hatters dropped two matches in singles play on Friday before action was suspended due to rain, then fell in three straight singles contests, Saturday morning to the Bucs.
ETSU's Roger Ordeig's 6-4, 6-1 win over Stetson's Egor Panyushkin on court No. 6 clinched the match for the top seeded Buccaneers, who have now made eight straight trips to the A-Sun Championship title match.
On court No. 3, Cahit Kapukiran fell to the Bucs' Sebastian Yllera 6-4, 6-3 to lead off singles play. Ismael Merino then downed Stetson's Simon Julin on court No. 4, 6-2, 6-4 to give ETSU a commanding 3-0 lead and set the stage for the clincher on the sixth court.
Stetson finishes the season with an 11-10 record overall and a 5-3 A-Sun mark. The Hatters reached the conference semifinals for the seventh time in the last eight seasons.
For his play during the conference championship, Stetson's No. 1, Nathan Debut was named to the All-Tournament Team. He joins three ETSU team members and a single player from both FGCU and UNF as the best the A-Sun Tournament had to offer in 2014.
