Singles Play Lifts Hatters Past Bethune-Cookman

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.—Stetson men's tennis won its second match in as many days as the Hatters downed county rival Bethune-Cookman, 5-2, on Sunday at City Island.
 
The Hatters (5-3) dominated singles play, winning five of six matches. Stetson head coach Christophe Noblet was pleased with the overall effort, despite losing the doubles point.
 
"Even though our doubles performance was disappointing today, I am proud of the way we bounced back in singles and showed great resiliency," Noblet said. "We are now about to enter the month of March, with a lot of matches coming up, and not much time to rest. Mental toughness is going to be a deciding factor in some of those upcoming matches, and the resiliency we showed this weekend will hopefully help us in the long run."
 
Bethune-Cookman earned the doubles point with solid wins at Nos. 2 & 3. Only Stetson's No. 1 duo of Loic Blanco and Colter DeCoste emerged victorious, winning 6-3. But the Wildcats' 1-0 lead didn't hold.
 
All of Stetson's singles wins came in straight sets. Blanco was a 6-2, 6-3 winner at No. 1, and Angus Bradshaw earned a 7-5, 6-0 victory at No. 3.
 
William Shkrob (6-4, 6-2), Pierre-Emmanuel Fossier (6-3, 6-2) and DeCoste (6-4, 6-0) eased to victory at Nos. 4-6.
 
The only Hatter to suffer a loss, Graham Ball at No. 2, did so in three sets. Bethune's Jose Plazas outlasted Ball 6-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8).
 
The Hatters host a pair of matches next week when they welcome Presbyterian on March 2, and Belmont on March 5.
