Hatters Outlasted in Conference Opener

DeLAND—FGCU outlasted Stetson and escaped with a 5-2 men's tennis win in the Atlantic Sun Conference opener for both teams, Thursday at Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.

The Hatters (10-4, 0-1) and Eagles (5-8, 1-0) saw three matches reach a third set and another make it to a second set tiebreaker. But despite the closeness of the match, Stetson head coach Christophe Noblet was disappointed.

"I think it could have gone either way tonight," Noblet said. "I don't think you can play any closer than this. This needs to sting a little bit so that we don't make the same mistakes again the next time we play them. I was pleased with our fight and we did a great job winning the doubles point. We had a lot of positives, but our expectations are high."

The match started on a strong note for the Hatters, as they opened by winning the doubles point. The No. 2 team of Angus Bradshaw and William Shkrob earned a 6-3 victory, and the No. 3 tandem of Coilin MacNamara and John Horoz Garner picked up a 6-3 win to clinch the point.

But FGCU won five straight singles matches, including a pair of three setters, to get the win. Loic Blanco earned Stetson's lone singles victory with a 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 triumph at No. 1.

Stetson returns to the court when the Hatters visit Lipscomb on March 30.
