Hatters Open Season With Impressive Effort

Box Score Stetson men's tennis opened the 2018 spring season with a resounding 7-0 victory over visiting Palm Beach Atlantic, Saturday at Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.

The Hatters swept every set in singles play and won all three doubles competitions as well. Head coach Christophe Noblet was pleased.

"This was a good start to the season," Noblet said. "We started a bit nervous in doubles as it was our first contest of the year, but we were able to play some good tennis in the right moment to take that first point. Then, I really liked how we used that momentum into our singles, and showed a dominant side early on. All things considered this is a very young squad, but they do not act like such, which is very encouraging for the rest of the season."

Stetson was dominant in doubles play, winning the point comfortably by getting a 6-2 win at No. 2 and a 6-4 victory at No. 3. The No. 1 team of Colter DeCoste and Linus Bergevi needed a little extra time but pulled out a 7-5 victory for the sweep.

Singles play was much of the same as the Hatters won all 12 sets and only needed one tiebreaker. Stetson debuted a reshuffled singles lineup with sophomore Angus Bradhsaw playing No. 1, freshman Malik Bhatnagar getting the nod at No. 2 and senior Loic Blanco playing No. 3. Collectively that trio lost just eight games in their six sets.

Freshman Antoine Sanchez picked up his first collegiate dual match victory with a solid win at No. 5, while William Shkrob and DeCoste earned positive results at Nos. 4 and 6, respectively.

The Hatters next participate in the ITF Futures in Palm Coast, which begins play on Friday, Jan. 26.
