Hatters set to host Florida Memorial in season opener

DeLand, Fla. -- Stetson University men's basketball opens its 2021-22 season Tuesday, Nov. 9 as the Hatters take on Florida Memorial University at home in the Edmunds Center. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. and can be streamed on Stetson's Hattervision YouTube account. 
 
Recap
The Hatters from a year ago played 27 games and finished with a 12-15 overall record and 7-9 in ASUN Conference action. Stetson played better at home as the green and white were 7-5 in the Edmunds Center but 3-8 away from DeLand. 
 
The Hatters advanced to the ASUN Championship tournament as the No. 7-seed and knocked off second-seeded Bellarmine 73-70 in the quarterfinals. Stetson ultimately fell to Liberty 77-64 in the semifinal round. 
 
The Hatters participated in the 2021 College Basketball Invitational and in the first round of action, Stetson topped Bowling Green 53-52 behind a clutch 3-pointer from Rob Perry. The win was Stetson's first postseason victory since the Hatters moved up to Division I status in 1971. Stetson's season came to an end a day later when the Hatters fell 77-72 to Coastal Carolina.
 
Scouting the Lions
Florida Memorial enters Tuesday night's action with four contests under its belt as FMU is 2-2 on the year. The Lions split their last two-game stretch as FMU topped Middle Georgia State University 89-82 on Nov. 5 but then fell to Faulkner University 75-64 a day later. 
 
Brent Holcombe leads the Lions in scoring with 16.8 points per game while Corey Benton has been consistent from the beyond the arc going 11-for-28 and averaging 14.3 points per game. As a team, the Lions have been outscored 308-275 through four contests but have outrebounded their opponents by a slight margin of 165-164. 
 
All-Time Series
Tuesday's meeting between Stetson and FMU will be the first all-time meeting between the two schools. 
 
Hatters Notes
A season ago, junior Rob Perry led the Hatters with 389 points on the year and averaged 14.4 points per game. Sophomore Chase Johnston totaled 364 points and averaged 13.5 per game while graduate student Christiaan Jones racked up 352 points and 13 even per game. Johnston led the Hatters in both made 3-pointers (79) and 3-pointers attempted (210) while Mahamadou Diawara averaged just under 10 points per game (9.8) and just over six boards per game (6.3).
 
The Hatters were tabbed to finish eighth in the ASUN preseason poll, behind North Florida and ahead of North Alabama. Perry was selected to the preseason ASUN All-Conference team. 
 
Looking Ahead
After Stetson opens the season at home, the Hatters go on a three-game road trip as Stetson heads to Georgia Tech on Nov. 12 then to Miami (OH) on Nov. 17 and finally to Lamar University on Nov. 19.
