Stetson Men's Golf Shatters Records in 52-Stroke, 32 under par win in Daytona Beach Intercollegiate

DAYTONA, Fla. – Hatter men's golf blew the competition away at the Daytona Beach Intercollegiate as records fell to the 2022-23 squad picked up three trophies at the event: the team championship with Matt Gauntlett and Truman Keppy sharing best individual performers.Matthew Gauntlett Truman Keppy Danny Forshey

With so many records to go in, the biggest record set goes to the 52-stroke win. While the archives only go back to 1994, no records could be found that came remotely near to the gargantuan mark.

"Our guys had a dominating performance," head coach Danny Forshey said "I am really proud of them. We are looking forward to our next event in the Bahamas and carrying this momentum forward."

Thirty-two under par marks the second-best tournament score all-time, second only to this team's mark at the Allstate Streamsong Invitational.

Gauntlett has been in the spotlight as he won at the Turning Stone Intercollegiate. Keppy has been a strong performer, but this marks a break-through with a trophy at the end of three rounds; two for each, if you include the team championship.

"I kept putting myself in good positions from start to finish," Gauntlett said in reference to his exceptional play "The final putt on 18 just sumarized the tournament and was a great way to close out the win."

Both players were consistent with Guantlett posting a 70-68-70 across the three rounds with three birdies in the final stanza; that includes a birdie on 18. The Watford, England, picked up 12 birdies across the three rounds with five in round two.

Keppy posted a 69-68-71 with a strong showing on the back nine. Falling to one over par after the third hole, the Lakemoor, Illinois, native focused in on the remaining 15 with a birdie on eight to hit par and a birdie on 17 to push to one under. The redshirt sophomore also picked up 12 birdies with a bogey-less second round 68.

"I just focused on one shot at a time," Keppy said about his performance "A big part of this tournament was also never getting down on myself and staying focused."

John Houchin's 67, best round on the squad for the tournament, round three tied the third-best all-time for a round of tournament play ever.
No rest for the team as they move on to the White Sands Invitational hosted by Virginia Commonwealth. The tournament starts Friday at the Ocean Club Golf Course on Paradise Island, Bahamas.
