DeLAND, Fla. — The Stetson men's tennis team opened its final tournament of the fall season with a strong showing Friday at the Mad Hatter Invitational, sweeping all three doubles matches and splitting four singles contests against Embry-Riddle at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.
The Hatters began the afternoon with a clean sweep in doubles competition, highlighted by a convincing performance from Gian Durrer and Alexandre Bergeron. The Stetson pairing cruised to a 6-1 victory over Embry-Riddle's Pranav Kumar and Leon Emich, setting the tone for an impressive afternoon of doubles play.
Keoni Puig-McCallan and Kartik Mandla also secured a victory for the Hatters, defeating Joao Morgado and Stefan Mos 6-4. Christian Kuehne and Lukas Janousek completed the sweep with a hard-fought 7-6 (5) victory over Joshua Nuyts and Frederic Tu, giving Stetson three wins in three doubles matches.
The momentum carried into singles competition, where Puig-McCallan and Durrer each added victories for the Hatters.
Puig-McCallan faced Morgado at the top singles position and battled through one of the afternoon's most competitive matches. After dropping the opening set 6-1, Puig-McCallan responded with a 6-4 victory in the second to force a deciding match tiebreak. The Stetson sophomore completed the comeback with a 10-7 victory, securing a 1-6, 6-4, 10-7 win.
Durrer turned in another impressive performance against Tu at the fourth singles position. After helping Stetson secure its doubles sweep earlier in the afternoon, Durrer controlled his singles match from start to finish, surrendering just three games in a 6-1, 6-2 victory. The result gave him a perfect 2-0 individual record on the opening day.
Kuehne also competed in singles against Nuyts, falling 6-1, 6-2, while Janousek faced Mos in another tightly contested match. Janousek claimed the opening set 6-3 before Mos rallied to take the second and ultimately prevailed in a deciding match tiebreak.
In Friday's opening matchup, Kennesaw State also turned in a strong performance against Xavier, sweeping all three doubles contests and earning victories throughout singles competition. The Owls' performance included singles wins from Dominic Ducariu, Nathan Walters, Ben Hudson, Xavi Ferrer, Juan Parrilla and Konstantinos Megalemos.
The Mad Hatter Invitational marks the final event of Stetson's fall schedule following a productive stretch of tournament competition throughout the Southeast. The Hatters entered the weekend coming off an impressive showing at the Samford Invite, where Kuehne captured both the singles and doubles main draw championships, partnering with Janousek for the doubles title.
Stetson will return to action Saturday morning when the Hatters face Kennesaw State at 9 a.m. Xavier and Embry-Riddle will follow in the afternoon session, scheduled for 12:30 p.m. The tournament concludes Sunday with Stetson facing Xavier and Kennesaw State taking on Embry-Riddle, both beginning at 8:30 a.m.
