Johnson City, Tenn. ? The 12-match winning streak of the 59th-ranked Stetson men's tennis team (14-4, 5-1 Atlantic Sun) came to an end Saturday in a 6-1 loss at #46 ETSU (15-3, 5-0 A-Sun). The defending conference champion Buccaneers kept possession of first place in the Atlantic Sun with the win.
Stetson's only point came when sophomore Hicham Laalej (Meknes, Morocco) won at #2 singles by default over Sebastian Serrano. Laalej was one point from winning 6-4, 6-3 when the match was defaulted. Senior Marcus Echtler (Venice, Fla.) teamed with junior Filip Kricka (Umag, Croatia) to edge out ETSU's Oscar Posada and Alex Ahlgren 9-8 at #1 doubles, but the Bucs took the other two matches to claim the doubles point.
At the #3 singles position, Kricka battled hard against a nationally ranked individual, taking a set in six straight games off 95th-ranked Lisandro Picardo before falling 6-1, 0-6, 6-2. Echtler did likewise at #1 singles against nationally 67th-ranked Enrique Olivares but Olivares claimed the 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 win.
Stetson returns home to host A-Sun rival Mercer Thursday afternoon at 12 p.m. at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.
