Stetson Sweeps Mercer on the Road

Macon, Ga. ? The Stetson men's tennis team improved to 15-4 overall and 6-0 in Atlantic Sun Conference action with a 7-0 sweep of host Mercer (6-10, 1-5 A-Sun) on Sunday at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center.  Rainy weather in the Peach State caused the match to be postponed from Saturday.  The Hatters had five double winners and won four of the singles matches in straight sets.

Senior Filip Kricka (Umag, Croatia), junior Mark Mestan (Cologne, Germany) and freshman Cesare Gallo (Portogruaro, Italy) dropped only three games each in their #1, #2 and #5 singles victories, respectively, against Justin Wimpee, Fernando Armendaris and Victor Dias.  Freshman Njal Stene (Oslo, Norway) and sophomore Gokay Celik (Istanbul, Turkey) had to work considerably harder to earn their points, defeating Bear foes Matthew Poleon and Chapman Mitchell in third-set tiebreakers at the #4 and #6 positions.

Gallo, Kricka, Mestan, Stene and freshman Maksim Levanovich (Minsk, Belarus) all won doubles matches; Stene paired with sophomore Chris Swanteson (Vaxjo, Sweden) while Kricka teamed with Levanovich and Gallo played with Mestan.

The Hatters head north to take on first-year program Kennesaw State at 1 p.m. tomorrow afternoon in Kennesaw, Ga.  Stetson's match at Campbell, which had been rescheduled for March 30 due to inclement weather, was a casualty of the poor weather this weekend and has been cancelled with no makeup date.
