DeLand, Fla. - The Stetson men's tennis team improved to 8-2 on the season and 3-0 in the Atlantic Sun Conference with a 6-1 win over visiting North Florida (8-4, 1-1 A-Sun) at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center on Saturday. Four Hatters were double winners in Stetson's sixth consecutive victory.
Senior Mark Mestan, along with sophomores Cesare Gallo (Portogruaro, Italy), Maksim Levanovich (Minsk, Belarus) and Njal Stene (Oslo, Norway) won in both singles and doubles. Mestan and Stene teamed up for an 8-5 #3 doubles win over Kurt Gattiker and Leonardo Nahar while Gallo and Levanovich blanked Hleb Maslau and Daniel Sotomarino 8-0 at the #2 position. Freshman Didrik Berg (Oslo, Norway) and junior Chris Swanteson (Vaxjo, Sweden) made it a clean doubles sweep with an 8-2 win at the top of the lineup against Taylor Albrecht and Moritz Buerchner.
In singles play, Mestan beat Buerchner 6-2, 6-2 at the top slot, Levanovich won 6-3, 6-1 at #2 against Albrecht, Gallo knocked off Sotomarino 7-5, 6-4 in the fourth position, junior Alex Hackett (Surrey, England) defeated Nahar 6-1, 7-6 at #5 and Stene was a 6-1, 6-3 winner at #6 against Gattiker.
Stetson hosts Eastern Kentucky at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 10 in the opening act of a Stetson-EKU non-conference tennis doubleheader at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center. The Hatter and Colonel women's squads meet at 5:30 p.m.
