Houchin Secures Top Amateur Honors at 77th Florida Open Championship

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Golf Club at Crown Colony and Cypress Lake Golf Club played host to the highly anticipated 77th Florida Open Championship, where Stetson University's rising star, John Houchin, made headlines this past weekend. With a total score of 206, Houchin finished the tournament tied-seventh while leading all amateurs in the event.

Throughout the tournament, Houchin showcased exceptional talent and unwavering consistency, solidifying his status as a standout golfer for Stetson's golf program. With a scoring average of 71.4, the second lowest in Stetson's men's golf history, Houchin has firmly established himself as a force in collegiate golf.

"John is an elite player," praised Danny Forshey, head coach of the Stetson golf program. "He embodies toughness, grit, and that commitment to never giving up. His ultra-competitive spirit is a true representation of our values here at Stetson."

Houchin's journey to competing in the Florida Open Championship was paved with remarkable achievements. As the reigning 2022 Amateur Match Play champion and an all-conference selection, he proved his ability to perform under pressure, placing him among the most promising golfers in the upcoming season.

Entering the event with confidence, Houchin teed off at 9:00 AM on Cypress Lake alongside fellow competitors Blake Dyer and Matt Borchert. Spanning 7,015 yards, the expansive fairways of Cypress Lake allowed Houchin to showcase his power and precision off the tee. Houchin fired an impressive 67, setting a strong foundation for the competition.

Transitioning to Crown Colony for the second round, Houchin embraced the unique demands of the course. With out of bounds areas and water hazards lining the fairways, Crown Colony tested Houchin's accuracy and decision-making. Undeterred by the challenge, he continued his stellar performance, carding another superb round of 67, solidifying his position among the tournament leaders.

Making the cut and advancing to the final round at Crown Colony, Houchin relished the opportunity to compete against the championship's elite. Paired with eventual champion Connor Arendell, Houchin demonstrated composure and skill. Despite the pressure of the final round, he closed with a commendable score of 72.

With consistent rounds of 67, 67, and 72, Houchin concluded the championship with an impressive total score of 206. His exceptional performance secured him the distinction of being the highest-placing amateur in the competition.

Looking ahead, Houchin's outstanding performance in the Florida Open Championship sets the stage for a promising senior year at Stetson University as he looks to build on his record-breaking season from a year prior.

"He is undeniably one of the top players in the country," expressed Head Coach Danny Forshey. "He is on his journey to the PGA Tour and we are incredibly proud of his accomplishments. We look forward to having him be a huge part of our success next season."
