A four-year letter winner while at Stetson (1981-85), Burnell was named a team captain his senior season, as well as being chosen team MVP his junior and senior seasons. Burnell concluded his career with 1,491 points, a figure which ranked fourth on Stetson’s career list at the time. He averaged 19.9 points per game during a stellar sophomore season. Upon graduation, Burnell played professionally for two years in Puerto Rico. Burnell went on to be an assistant coach for the Hatters under legendary coach Glenn Wilkes for seven years. He then became the first head coach in Daytona State College history, posting a 213-101 record in seven seasons. He was inducted into the Stetson Athletics Hall of Fame in 1992.
