In 1952, Morland became head basketball coach and chairman of the Department of Physical education at Stetson. Morland never had a losing campaign while coaching the Hatters. Twice they were chosen the top college team in Florida by a state poll of sports writers. In 1958, after coaching, he became chairman of the Graduate Council and Chairman of the Education Department. He also was a recipient of the McEniry award for Excellence in Teaching Before Stetson, Morland graduated from Birmingham-Southern College where he competed in basketball and track. Morland served in the Navy for four years and was discharged as a lieutenant with 11 battle stars. After the war he was as assistant coach at Springfield College where he obtained his master's degree. From 1947 to 1950 he coached at Florida Southern College. From 1950-52, Morland was a lecturer in education at New York University while obtaining his doctorate.
